Last week, Modern Earth covered the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce Business Awards Gala on Twitter for the third consecutive year.
Each year, we see a different group of businesses being honoured by the Chambers for their contributions to Manitoba’s business environment and economic diversity. This year in particular, we were honoured to participate in a new way. Our President, Philip Giles, was one of two Masters of Ceremonies charged with marshalling the event alongside Frank Sottana, District Vice President of CIBC.
“It was a great experience,” Philip says of the evening. “We’re always happy to support the Manitoba Chambers however we can.”
We’ve seen the social media engagement around the Awards gala grow significantly over the past three events. Our first opportunity to cover the dinner in 2010 saw only a few comments from attendees, and last year’s event had more interaction from nominees and their family members. This year, the chatter was constant – replies and conversation about the progress during the evening even extended to one of the winners – Hemp Oil Canada – exclaiming “Hemp hemp Hooray!” during their walk to the stage, at the encouragement of our own @modernsusan (Susan Hurrell, Modern Earth’s Dir. of Marketing who leads the Modern Earth Tweet Team (@metweeteam)). Search out the night’s Twitterstream by using the hashtag #mbizawards2012.
The growth in interest and use of social media by Manitoba businesses goes to show that our province is stepping up and presenting a strong modern face to the world. “It is wonderful to see Manitoba businesses extending their reach and building connections using social media tools,” agrees Susan. “Those connections deepen relationships and put our businesses on the web in the social places their customers already are – and where new customers start their research when selecting products and services. Manitoba businesses need to be there – and maximize their visibility online. It’s great to see this already happening and to be part of it at events like the @mbizawards2012”
Congratulations to all the winners and nominees of the Manitoba Business Awards!
Social Media is becoming a part of many business and communications practices.
From every day customer service, to interacting with clients and potential customers, even reporting the news of the day - platforms such as Facebook and Twitter have made their way into the public consciousness. These platforms provide anyone interested with ways to dig deeper than ever before into the events already happening around them.
One of the ways we at Modern Earth help our clients and the community do is provide more information about their special events to those interested, using social media. In particular, the Modern Earth Tweet Team has spent the past year attending special events, conferences, and gala dinners hosted by Manitoba businesses and associations, and spreading the word in real time about what happens at these events. We have covered TEDxManitoba, the QNet conference, the Future Leaders of Manitoba awards and more.
We're proud to support Manitoba's visibility in the social media sphere, and to have been asked by the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce to "continue the tradition" we began last year at our inaugural Tweet Team event.
For the second year, the Modern Earth Tweet Team was asked to put the “media” back into social media and tweet the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce Business Awards Gala Dinner on Wednesday Oct. 26th. It was a gathering of over 400 leaders of the Manitoba business community at the Delta Hotel, and a good time was had by all – especially those businesses who took home the coveted awards in their category.
This year, the Chamber arranged for some big screen televisions to sit adjacent to the large screens on either side of the stage, to better allow the attendees to follow along with and participate in the Twitter stream as the evening unfolded.
You can read all about the Manitoba Business Awards, including a list of past winners, on the MB Chambers website.
Yesterday, it was once again my privilege to speak to participants of the YMYWCA Self Employment program on how to launch and market their new business ventures online. I visit the YMYWCA offices several times a year to speak to each group of new entrepreneurs who are starting up businesses here in Manitoba.
In addition to the 7 deadly sins of web design, I also talk about how to use social media effectively, as well as the value of search engine optimization. There is the occasional misconception that because Winnipeg is a small market, a website doesn’t have to be optimized – that there are few competitors (especially if we are counting bricks and mortar locations that do something similar). So I spend a bit of time explaining the benefits of optimization, the key things to look for when being quoted for an SEO project, and why being fully SEO’d for Winnipeg as a key term can help bring their business to the top of local search results.
It’s always a pleasure to hear about the great new business ideas that are being prepared for launch. On behalf of all the Earthlings, we wish each participant much success. We understand the challenges of growing a small business – and it’s great to see this new start-ups joining the Manitoba economy.

Modern Earth has been a member of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce for years, and attend as many of their events as we can. The membership luncheons deliver great speakers and networking opportunities, the Chapter Meetings are highly informative and provide a great networking opportunities with businesses in different parts of the city, the We Believe program allows committed and visionary business leaders to encourage us to continue to build our city's business community - and also provide .... you guessed it ... great networking opportunities.
We can’t imagine not being part of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce – and if you are in business in Winnipeg, you should be too. Hope to see you out at the next Mixer on April 6th!
On Saturday, Jan 15th, it was time for the "Earthlings Plus Ones" to kick back and enjoy some social time together to wind up the 2010 production year and kick off 2011 with some good natured video game and board game rivalry.
There was a wide variety of video games, as well as Rock Band (always a favourite for the non-Halo crowd), and some board and card games - something for everyone. The "littlest Earthling" made her team debut - baby Charlotte made her appearance shortly after our team event at TRON - so this was her chance to meet the people her daddy works with every day.
You can see some photos on our Facebook Page - and while you're there - become Zeke's friend and "like" our Modern Earth page.
Thanks to Dan & Marnie for hosting such a great event! We all had a blast!
